Postcards from Indo – Mentawai and Lombok

The cliffs could have fooled you that you are not in Indonesia, but the wave makes it very obvious. A typical Indo wooden fishing boat, usually painted in blue. Three flights, one ferry ride and one boat ride through a narrow jungle canal are needed to get to this Mentawai island. The canal ride is quite an experience. There is no fooling anyone with the palm tree backdrop like this. Mentawai islands. These tasty fruits are lychee and lato lato. One of the most iconic surf spots in the Menawai islands. Why? It's the only one that works when waves are super small. A little bit off the beaten track thanks to the bad dirt road this Lombok beach is beautiful. The wave is not that bad as well. Rent a scooter with surfboard racks, pack your things into a DryTide backpack and explore the Lombok island. Top turn. Guntur. Mentawai islands. Always good times. These crabs running over sand, I still don't get it how they can be so fast. Jungle plants in Lombok. These leaves are huge and can easily double as an umbrella when it rains. FUN MOON FACT: In the northern hemisphere the first quarter looks like a growing D, while in the southern hemisphere it looks like a C. New moon, south of the equator. When you don't really unpack, you just open your boardbag and take what you need. After a few days this is how it looks like. No roads, no cars, no motorbikes. Just warm Indian ocean 5 steps from your porch. This long left is good for turns. Boat trips, palm trees and shakas. Long and narrow boats are standard Mentawai mean of transport. Thanks to the shape these are really fast, but take some getting used to as they are not very stable. DryTide whale t-shirt doubling as a surf tee. Lombok views. This is actually a very popular sunset watching peninsula near Kuta, Lombok. It is obvious why. Not sunset yet, but the views from the peninsula are amazing any time of the day. With the wave peeling along the coast of this tiny island, just under the palm trees, there are not many more photogenic surf spots in the world. Guntur throwing some water around at sunset. A wave goes unridden. Doesn't happen very often here. From asphalt to dirt roads, pot holes and single tracks.

Mentawai islands and Lombok

It has been a while since our last Indonesia surf trip. We went to visit some friends in one of the best places for surfing in the world, Mentawai islands and we went to the Bali’s east neighbor, Lombok. It wasn’t the smoothest of trips. Missed flights, stitches, flu… but it was at the same time different, exciting and really good to be back in Indonesia. Here is a gallery of shots from both locations.
