Around water, the unexpected is part of every adventure. A calm morning can turn into a windy afternoon. Small waves become spray. A short walk turns into heavy rain. Sometimes all it takes is one slippery step or an unexpected splash.
Point Nemo was built for moments like these. The moments when staying dry isn’t about comfort, it’s about protecting the gear you rely on. Whether it’s your camera, laptop, spare clothes or everyday essentials, Point Nemo lets you keep moving with the confidence that your gear stays protected when everything around it gets wet.
Our roll top backpacks have been part of DryTide since the beginning and they remain our favourite choice for most adventures. They are simple, reliable and provide excellent waterproof protection.
Over the years, however, one question kept coming back. Would we ever make a waterproof backpack with a zipper?
At the same time, we wanted to create a backpack that could offer an even higher level of waterproof protection. A backpack that stays dry even if it ends up underwater for a moment.
Point Nemo is the result of both ideas. It combines an airtight waterproof zipper with fully welded construction to create the most waterproof backpack we’ve ever built. It is not meant to replace our roll top backpacks. It is simply the right choice for adventures where water is a bigger part of the journey.
For decades, roll-top closures have been the standard for waterproof backpacks, and for good reason. They are simple, reliable and offer excellent waterproof protection. So why did we decide to build Point Nemo with an airtight waterproof zipper instead?
Roll-Top Closure
Airtight Waterproof Zipper

Waterproof performance depends on keeping the zipper clean, lubricated and fully closed.
Provides reliable protection against rain, splashes and brief accidental submersion.
Provides our highest level of waterproof protection, especially during prolonged exposure to water.
Roll-top opening allows the backpack capacity to expand or compress depending on your load.
Fixed opening with quick and convenient access to your gear.
Simpler construction with fewer maintenance requirements.
Airtight zipper requires occasional cleaning and silicone-based lubrication.
Best for general outdoor adventures and travel.
Best for frequent adventures around water and carrying valuable electronics or camera gear.
- Want the highest level of waterproof protection
- Prefer quick access through a waterproof zipper
- Carry electronics or camera gear
- Spend a lot of time around water
- Travel where weather is unpredictable
- Need expandable storage
- Pack bulky gear
- Prefer the simplicity of a roll-top closure
Both closure systems are highly waterproof when used correctly. Point Nemo simply pushes waterproof performance one step further, while offering much faster access to your gear. The best choice simply depends on how and where you use your backpack.

Point Nemo is built for adventures where water, unpredictable weather and valuable gear come together. From tropical downpours to rough boat rides, it protects your gear where ordinary backpacks fall short.

Need help choosing the right backpack size? Visit our Backpack Size Comparison Guide to compare dimensions and capacity across the DryTide backpack range.
Is Point Nemo completely waterproof?
Yes. Point Nemo is built with fully welded seams and an airtight waterproof zipper to keep water out when properly closed.
Is Point Nemo a submersible backpack?
Point Nemo is designed to withstand brief accidental submersion when properly closed. It is not intended for prolonged underwater use, but it offers the highest level of waterproof protection in the DryTide backpack range.
Does Point Nemo float?
Yes. If the backpack is properly closed and contains enough trapped air, it will float on water, making it easier to recover if accidentally dropped.
Is the zipper difficult to open?
Airtight waterproof zippers require more force than standard zippers. This is completely normal and helps create a reliable waterproof seal.
Can I carry a laptop inside?
Yes. Point Nemo was designed to work as a waterproof backpack for electronics, cameras and valuable gear. It easily accommodates most everyday laptops up to 16” size while providing excellent protection from rain, spray and wet conditions. Backpack does not have a dedicated laptop pocket, these are sold separately and can be swapped with the removable internal pocket.
Can I use Point Nemo for everyday use?
Absolutely. Although it was developed for adventures around water, Point Nemo is just as practical for commuting, travel and everyday life, especially if you regularly carry electronics or other valuables.
How do I care for the backpack?
After exposure to saltwater, rinse the backpack and zipper with fresh water. Keep the zipper clean and occasionally apply a silicone based zipper lubricant to ensure smooth operation.
Is a waterproof backpack with zipper like Point Nemo better than a roll top backpack?
Not necessarily. Both designs have their advantages. Our roll top backpacks are simple to use and the roll top closure also allows you to adjust the backpack’s size depending on how much you’re carrying. Choose Point Nemo if quick zipper access and our highest level of waterproof protection are your priorities. Choose a roll top backpack if you prefer a simpler closure with slightly more flexible packing.
Can I use Point Nemo as carry-on luggage?
Yes. Point Nemo meets the carry-on size limits of most airlines. With dimensions of 48 cm × 30 cm × 20 cm, it fits comfortably within the standard cabin baggage allowance offered by most full-service and low-cost carriers. Please note that it exceeds the free personal item allowance offered by some airlines, such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, unless cabin baggage is included with your ticket. For reference, we used the common carry on size limit of 55 × 40 × 20–25 cm, which is accepted by most airlines.
Is Point Nemo suitable for rafting?
Yes. Point Nemo is designed for rafting and other adventures where your backpack is regularly exposed to spray, splashes or brief accidental submersion. When properly closed, the airtight waterproof zipper and fully welded construction help keep your gear dry.
Is Point Nemo suitable for air travel?
Yes. Point Nemo fits within the carry on size limits of most airlines. Because it has no rigid internal frame, it can adapt slightly to the available space. As with any carry on bag, we recommend checking your airline’s size requirements before travelling.
Can I use Point Nemo as a camera backpack?
Yes. Point Nemo is an excellent waterproof backpack for cameras, drones and other sensitive equipment. While it does not include internal padding or dedicated padded camera inserts, it provides outstanding protection from rain, spray and brief accidental submersion. Simply add your preferred camera insert for extra impact protection.
Why is Point Nemo more expensive than your roll top backpacks?
Point Nemo costs more than our roll top backpacks because it combines premium TPU coated nylon, an airtight waterproof zipper and a more complex welded construction. Its rounded design requires more individual panels and significantly more welding during production. The result is our most waterproof backpack, offering faster access to your gear and a level of waterproof protection that goes beyond a traditional roll top design.
Point Nemo is the most remote place in the world’s oceans. It is the point on Earth farthest from any land. Located deep in the South Pacific Ocean, it is so isolated that the closest humans are often astronauts orbiting overhead rather than people on the ground.
Surrounded by thousands of kilometres of open water, Point Nemo represents true isolation, raw nature and total exposure to the elements. That’s exactly the spirit that inspired this backpack.

Some adventures take you around water.
Others take you straight into it.
Point Nemo is built for both.
